Girl brutally killed cycling home from Amsterdam may be tied to another violent crime
The 17-year-old girl found dead in the water near Amsterdam-Duivendrecht on Wednesday morning was killed by “severe violence” while cycling home from a night out, the police said. Investigators are looking for one perpetrator, who may have also been on a bicycle.
According to the newspaper AD, the police are also investigating a sex crime that happened nearby last week. The investigations are separate, but the teams are in close contact.
The body of the teen girl from Abcoude was found around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the water on Holtenbergweg in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. That was half an hour after she left the area around Leidseplein, cycling home after a night out in Amsterdam.
The police are looking for witnesses and ask anyone who saw the girl cycling home to come forward. She had light skin and medium-length, blond hair. She was wearing a light gray hoodie, light gray pants, and black Adidas sneakers and was carrying a red handbag on the handlebars of her bicycle, a gray men’s electric bike of the Cowboy brand.
According to the newspaper AD, the police are also actively investigating a serious sex crime that happened last week, about 3 kilometers away from where the girl's body was found. A man pulled a woman from the road on Weesperzijde, sexually assaulted her, and beat her up. The police are investigating the cases separately, but investigators are keeping close contact with each other, a police spokesperson told the newspaper.
