Police seize 1,600 kilograms of cocaine in Gorinchem and Ede, four arrested
The Oost-Nederland police unit has intercepted a total of over 1,600 kilos of cocaine in recent weeks in an ongoing drug investigation. The drugs have a street value worth dozens of millions of euros. Four suspects are currently in custody.
The first arrest came on June 26, when a 53-year-old man from Apeldoorn was arrested in Ede when almost 60 kilos of cocaine were discovered by police. This was followed by police discovering and seizing almost 1,600 kilos of cocaine in two vehicles in Gorinchem.
Three men from Rotterdam, aged 22, 37, and 54, were arrested during these seizures. Searches followed in locations in Gorinchem and Lelystad.
“Both the police and the Public Prosecution Service (OM) consider cases like this a high priority. The (large-scale) trade in narcotics has enormous and destabilizing effects on society and is often accompanied by violence, extortion, and even assassinations,” police said in a statement about the incidents.
Police also noted the effect that drug addiction has on society in their statement. The suspects are accused of intentionally possessing a large quantity of narcotics. More arrests related to this investigation have not been ruled out by police.
