Man, 64, severely beaten after defending woman from harassment in Breskens
A 64-year-old man from Sluis was seriously injured early Sunday after intervening when he saw a woman being harassed in Breskens, police said. The assault occurred around 12:15 a.m. on Molenwater, shortly after the end of the Visserijfeesten.
The man was on his way home when he witnessed the harassment, De Telegraaf reports. He confronted the male suspect, who then punched him in the face and kicked him to the ground, according to police. The victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.
The motive for the harassment or the relationship between those involved has not been disclosed. Authorities have not announced any arrests.
Police issued “an urgent appeal” Sunday for witnesses to come forward. Investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have seen the incident.
The Visserijfeesten is an annual event in Breskens, a coastal town in Zeeland. The festival had concluded before the assault took place.
