Suspect arrested for fatal hit-and-run in Friesland village
A 35-year-old man from the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân has been arrested in connection with a fatal collision in the Frisian town of Burdaard last night. A 33-year-old man from Stiens died in the incident. The suspect is in custody and is being questioned.
At around 12:15 a.m., police received a report of a severely injured person on Iedyk. The man died at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the car that struck him had fled the scene. The victim had been riding a bicycle.
Police later located the vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident after people in the nearby vicinity had been urged to help in the search via Burgernet, which is a citizen alert system used by Dutch authorities to involve residents in active searches for suspects or missing persons by sending notifications via app, SMS, or phone. The vehicle is a black pickup truck.
It was not reported whether the man had been found as a result of the Burgernet search. The man is suspected of causing a fatal accident.
Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the collision, including whether alcohol or excessive speed played a role. Authorities have asked any witnesses or individuals with relevant dashcam or doorbell camera footage to come forward.
