A 22-year-old man accused of stabbing an 85-year-old pedestrian on the Jaagpad in Amsterdam Nieuw-West will remain in custody for at least 14 days, a judge ruled Friday.
The stabbing occurred Tuesday afternoon on the footpath along the edge of the city. Witnesses told police they saw a man approach the victim around 2:30 p.m., after which a verbal altercation took place.
According to police, the situation escalated quickly. The suspect allegedly stabbed the older man multiple times before fleeing the scene.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital with multiple stab wounds. Police said he remained conscious and was able to speak.
The suspect was arrested shortly after fleeing. His pre-trial detention has been extended as the investigation continues.
