Tropical temps up to 36°C this week; Slightly cooler weather from Thursday

The Netherlands is in for some HOT weather this week, with temperatures climbing to tropical values of 30 degrees Celsius and above. On Tuesday, highs of around 36 degrees are expected in several regions, according to Weeronline’s forecast. The weather should cool down to more typical summer temperatures from Thursday.

The National Heat Plan takes effect at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, urging informal carers and healthcare professionals to pay extra attention to the people in their care. Other Netherlands residents are also asked to keep an extra eye out for vulnerable people in their environment, especially the elderly, the chronically ill, and young children.

Monday will be sunny, with a few cirrus clouds making an appearance here and there in the west. The day will warm up quickly, with temperatures ranging between 20 and 26 degrees by noon. Maximums will climb to tropical values of 30 to 33 degrees in the center and south of the country. The coastal areas will see highs of 26 to 30 degrees, with a cooling sea breeze at the beaches making it feel less hot.

There will be sunshine until sunset around 10:00 p.m., and it will remain warm for most of that time. Halfway through the evening, it will still be 22 degrees in the north and 26 to 29 degrees in the middle and south. Minimums will eventually drop to between 14 degrees in the north and 20 degrees in Zeeland.

Tuesday will be scorching hot with lots of sunshine. “Very warm and also humid air is coming in, which will make it feel oppressively warm,” Weeronline said. Maximums will climb to between 30 and 36 degrees on a large scale. Many beaches will also hit tropical values, with coastal maximums ranging between 27 and 30 degrees. There will be hardly any wind to bring relief.

Wednesday will be another day of hot summer weather, ending with heavy showers in the afternoon. “The very warm air will eventually be driven away, but when exactly this will happen is still uncertain,” Weeronline said. If the showers only start late in the day, maximums will still rise to 30 to 35 degrees inland.

From Thursday, a north to northeast wind will bring less warm air into the country for a few days. Temperatures will drop back to 20 to 25 degrees, with a mix of sunshine, clouds, and the occasional shower. Nighttime temperatures will also be significantly cooler with minimum temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.
