Footballer Quincy Promes extradited to Netherlands

Footballer Quincy Promes is on his way to the Netherlands, where he has to serve 7.5 years in prison. Dubai extradited him on Friday, and he will be put on a chartered flight, accompanied by Koninklijke Marechaussee officers, sources in Dubai told the Telegraaf.

After landing in the Netherlands, Promes will be transferred to a detention center to start serving his sentence for stabbing his cousin (1.5 years) and involvement in cocaine trafficking (6 years). The appeal in these cases is underway.

Earlier this month, Promes told RTL Boulevard that he tried to make a deal with the Public Prosecution Service (OM). He would come to the Netherlands for his appeal trial provided that he was not arrested and could continue his football career while the appeal was ongoing.

The OM had little interest in the idea, saying that Dubai was on the point of extraditing the footballer. That proved to be true. The local police arrested Promes at his home shortly after his interview with RTL.

According to the Telegraaf, the chartered flight to bring Promes to the Netherlands will cost taxpayers over 100,000 euros.
