Resident dies in fire at Rotterdam dementia care home, cause under investigation

A fire broke out Friday afternoon on the fifth floor of a care home located on Veldstraat in Rotterdam-Feijenoord, resulting in the death of one resident, Rijnmond reported. The fire broke out around 3:15 p.m. in one of the rooms at the Hof op Zuid care facility.

Emergency responders were aware from the outset that a person was inside the room where the fire began. Despite firefighters quickly bringing the fire under control and ambulance personnel entering the building, the resident could not be saved.

The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the resident’s death. No information has been released yet regarding the identity of the deceased.

Hof op Zuid is a specialized care home that serves approximately 130 residents, providing support for people with dementia and those requiring physical care.
