Man dies in Hague police custody after "becoming unwell" during arrest
A man in his forties died in police custody on Monday after being arrested by The Hague police, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) told NU.nl. According to the OM, the man “became unwell at some point” during the arrest.
The man died in the courtyard of the police station on Jan Hendrikstraat. According to the OM, the authorities tried to provide medical assistance. “But that was to no avail,” the spokesperson said. The cause of the man’s death is unknown.
The OM did not say why the police arrested the man. It is also unclear where he was arrested. Nothing is known about his identity.
The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, has launched an investigation. The investigation will look into whether the arresting officers were violent with the man.
