Youth assaults Ede enforcement officer during market square disturbance
On the evening of Wednesday, June 4, a serious incident occurred on the market square in Ede when a municipal enforcement officer was kicked in the head by a youth causing disturbances. The enforcement officers arrested one individual at the scene and have filed charges against the involved youth, the municipality reported.
The incident began during routine patrol duties when enforcement officers approached a group of youths on the Marktplein in Ede. The youths were riding fatbikes in a pedestrian zone and causing excessive noise. The officers addressed their behavior, but the situation escalated.
One of the youths reacted violently by kicking an enforcement officer in the head. To restore order, other enforcement officers supporting the scene were forced to threaten the use of batons. The assaulted enforcement officer was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Mayor René Verhulst spoke about the event, saying, “Our enforcement officers work daily on the streets to ensure safety and livability in Ede. It is unacceptable and unbelievable that they are confronted with aggression, threats, intimidation, or violence of any kind while performing their duties. Kicking an enforcement officer is completely ridiculous. We stand fully behind our employees and will do everything possible to guarantee their safety. We will also take legal action. Charges of assault have been filed, and I expect decisive action to be taken.”
