Hundreds of women take to streets after Amsterdam assaults, teen girl’s murder
Hundreds of women across the Netherlands held overnight demonstrations demanding greater safety for women and girls, NOS reports.
Organized by feminist group Dolle Mina, the actions included nighttime bike rides and marches in at least 19 cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Coevorden, Eindhoven, Groningen, and The Hague.
The demonstrations aimed to highlight routes and public spaces where women often feel unsafe and to stress that public safety is a collective responsibility.
Most rides began at midnight. In some cities, including Groningen, participants started earlier because buses stop running after midnight, leaving demonstrators without safe transportation home.
The protests followed violent incidents in Amsterdam. Authorities reported the death of 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude after a night out. In the days prior, a woman was assaulted and sexually abused on the Weesperzijde. Police later arrested a suspect in the assault, who was also identified as a suspect in Lisa’s murder.
In The Hague, hundreds of demonstrators marched through city streets. Many participants said they were motivated by anger and grief over recent events and felt compelled to take action.
