Dutch workers less willing to switch jobs amid economic uncertainty, survey finds

Workers in the Netherlands are increasingly staying with the same employer, according to new findings from employers' organization AWVN. The organization conducted a survey among approximately 150 large companies and institutions, revealing a shift toward greater job retention across various sectors.

A spokesperson for AWVN said the trend is largely driven by economic uncertainty, which has made employees more cautious about changing jobs. International trade tensions, particularly those linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies, were cited as a key factor.

“In uncertain times, workers are less inclined to take risks. When uncertainty increases, people choose security,” the AWVN spokesperson said.

The organization also noted that many people who had intended to look for a new job in recent years have already done so. Additionally, closures of companies—especially in the industrial sector—have contributed to a more cautious job market.

As a result of this shift, pressure on the labor market has slightly eased, AWVN stated. However, labor shortages remain a major issue for employers. Eight out of ten employers surveyed reported that they are still struggling to fill vacancies.

Employers are particularly in need of candidates with vocational training and professional experience. Sectors facing the most serious shortages include technology, production, and information and communication technology (ICT).
