Cool and rainy holiday in Netherlands today; More sunshine, higher temps coming
Today is a public holiday in the Netherlands, and many people are also taking Friday off for a 4-day weekend. The long weekend starts cool, cloudy, and rainy, but more sunshine and higher temperatures are expected from Friday, according to the KNMI.
Thursday will be cloudy all day with scattered showers. Maximums will climb to between 16 degrees in the north and 20 degrees in the south. The wind will come from the southwest and be moderate inland and strong along the coast.
Friday will start cloudy, but the sun will break through in more and more places by the afternoon. The day will be dry and warmer than Thursday in many places. Afternoon temperatures will range between 16 degrees on the Wadden and 25 degrees in the southwest, with a moderate to strong westerly wind.
Saturday and Sunday will see periodically sunny and mostly dry weather, with maximums between 20 and 25 degrees. Saturday will be the warmest day, but it comes with a chance of thunderstorms in the southeast.
Showers will return to the Netherlands on Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, the KNMI expects “periods of sunshine and mostly dry” weather. “The chance of rain or thunderstorms is 20 to 30% daily. The temperature forecast is uncertain, but the chance of (very) warm weather increases to about 50% from June 6.”
The changeable weather might not be the ideal picture of summer, but the Netherlands needs the rain. The spring was extremely sunny, dry, and mild, according to Weeronline. The country got around 797 hours of sunshine, compared to the typical 578 hours, only 66 mm of rain (typical 159 mm), and the average temperature was an entire degree higher than typical at 10.8 degrees Celsius.
