Large fire destroys part of Leeuwarden primary school
A large fire destroyed the temporary classrooms of a primary school in Leeuwarden overnight. The fire brigade let the two-storey building burn down in a controlled manner while focusing on protecting the rest of the school and the surrounding area.
According to the local newspaper LC, the school involved is De Pionier on Foarein. The fire brigade responded to the school at 1:35 a.m. and almost immediately scaled up to a “very large fire.”
Firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze from inside, but flames quickly engulfed the entire two-storey structure housing the temporary classrooms. The firefighters withdrew and decided to let the building burn down and focus their efforts on preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the school and surrounding buildings.
At around 7:00 a.m., the fire brigade reported that the fire was under control and didn’t spread. The school’s main building remained undamaged.
Pupils from groups 3, 4, 7, and 8 were taught in the temporary building while the main building, which holds their usual classrooms, undergoes renovations. According to LC, the school will be closed on Wednesday.
