Gaza protest turns ugly at Leiden University, 75 arrested

The police in The Hague arrested 75 people at a Gaza-support demonstration at Leiden University on Wednesday after tensions rose and the demonstration turned “troubled,” the police said. 74 of the suspects were arrested for vandalism, and one for doxxing.

Over 100 protesters gathered at the Leiden University building on Turfmarkt on Tuesday afternoon. Some of the demonstrators occupied the building, preventing anyone else from entering.

“Participants chanted slogans and hung up banners,” the university told Omroep West. “The vast majority of the participants in the action left the building after a short time. However, a small number refused to leave.”

The police eventually intervened and escorted the demonstrators outside away from the building, and started removing people from within the building, arresting them one by one and placing them in vans.

Two university buildings remained closed for the rest of the day. According to the university, protesters broke the locks of emergency doors and erected barricades in the building.
