Police say fatal Rotterdam bridge incident was an accident

Rotterdam police have stated that the deaths of two people whose car fell from the open Calandbrug bridge early Monday morning were the result of a tragic accident.

The incident unfolded around 1:00 a.m. when the bridge in the Botlek district was raised to allow ship traffic. Despite the raised barriers, a car drove past the closed gates and plunged into the water below.

Emergency services quickly responded, dispatching a trauma helicopter and fire crews who used drones and divers to search the water. The submerged vehicle was located at approximately 8:15 a.m., with the bodies of the two occupants found inside. Their identities have not yet been disclosed.

After investigating the scene, police ruled out any foul play. "The investigation has been completed, and we see no reason to believe anything other than an unfortunate accident occurred," said a police spokesperson. "No further criminal investigation or blood tests are needed given the deaths of the victims."

While the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, authorities have emphasized that the evidence strongly suggests an accidental fall. "All possibilities remain open," the spokesperson added.

The vehicle involved in the crash is reportedly linked to AenF, a Rotterdam-based staffing agency, although the company has not confirmed ownership. AenF stated it could not verify if the vehicle was theirs and highlighted that the police are handling the investigation.

The Calandbrug, which is frequently raised for ship traffic, has seen previous accidents, but this marks the first fatal incident in recent years. Police are continuing their investigation into the crash, with initial findings pointing to it being a tragic accident.
