Rotterdam to offer free library memberships to all residents from May 1
All residents in Rotterdam can pick up a free membership for the library from May 1. They will then be able to borrow six books a year for free at one of the 23 libraries in the city, the municipality reported. The city is claiming that they are the first city in the Netherlands to offer residents a free membership with this initiative.
According to the municipality, the membership provides an easy way for people to get to know the broad supply that the libraries offer. “In addition, members are given discounts or even free access to courses, performances, lectures and other activities.”
Rotterdammers who want to borrow more books, or use e-books or listening books, can choose a plus subscription. This makes unlimited borrowing possible for four euros a month.
Alderman Said Kasmi has said that the library has “great value” for Rotterdam from a cultural and educational perspective. “As an alderman for culture and education, I am incredibly proud that we are the first city in the Netherlands to take this important step. A city that reads is a city that grows. And we are only making Rotterdam stronger with this step.”
The main branch of the Rotterdam Library on the Binnenrotte near Blaak station will be extensively renovated in the coming years. The building from 1983 known for its thick yellow pipes on the outside will be ready in 2029.
