Massive fire at Balkbrug recycling facility contained, extinguishing efforts continue
A large fire that broke out Sunday morning at a recycling facility in the Overijssel village of Balkbrug is now under control, according to a spokesperson for the IJsselland Safety Region. However, firefighters are expected to remain on-site for an extended period to fully extinguish the fire.
The fire started early Sunday morning for reasons that remain unknown. The facility contained mainly household waste, which reportedly fueled the flames. Firefighters are using cranes to remove the waste from the building and extinguish it outside, a process that is expected to temporarily increase smoke levels in the area.
Earlier in the morning, an NL-Alert was issued due to the heavy smoke released by the fire. That warning has since been lifted, but local authorities continue to advise residents to keep windows and doors closed until the smoke has fully cleared.
The fire occurred at an industrial site in Balkbrug, prompting a large emergency response. Firefighters deployed multiple units to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no injuries have been reported.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. The recycling facility, which specializes in processing household waste, sustained significant damage. The full extent of the damage remains unclear.
