Fourth suspect in Drents Museum art theft remanded to jail for 90 days
The fourth suspect of the art theft from the Drents Museum in Assen will remain in custody for another 90 days, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) has reported. This is regarding the 26-year-old male from Heerhugowaard who was the fourth suspect to be arrested in Obdam, Noord-Holland, in February.
A historical golden helmet and three golden armbands from Romania were stolen during the robbery at the end of January. The four suspects are only allowed to contact their lawyer, an appeal was filed against these restrictions, but it was dismissed by the court.
The stolen art pieces have not yet been recovered, with rewards of up to 250,000 euros being offered for anybody with any information that could lead to the capture of the items.
The pieces have considerable value to Romania. The unique artifacts include a helmet that is nearly 2,500 years old and three golden bracelets that are about 2,075 years old. They were part of a collection of 673 objects that were on loan from Romania for the Dacia exhibit at the Drents Museum.
It has been reported that the incident could cost the Netherlands 5.8 million euros if the items are not found. The three other suspects were also from Heerhugowaard. They were arrested on January 29. The court had also ruled that two of these suspects would spend an extra 90 days in custody.
Police are yet to find a fifth suspect. A man was seen at hardware store in Assen shortly before the break-in. Security camera footage released by the police showed the man, with a lighter skin tone, wearing a black Nike baseball hat, a black Nike long-sleeve top, and black rectangular glasses.
The first hearing in the case is scheduled for May 9 in the court in Assen.
