Suspect in Assen art theft remanded to jail; two suspects released

The 20-year-old suspect of the art theft in the Drents Museum in Assen, who was arrested this week, has been remanded to jail for another 14 days, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) has reported. The other, an 18-year-old man who was also arrested this week, has been released. Both men are from Heerhugowaard.

Three valuable Romanian artifacts were stolen on January 25. The artifacts have not been found, as of yet, with a 250,000 euros reward for any information that can lead to the recovery of the items.

The suspect who has been remanded is the same man that police shared images of from a DIY store in Assen. The man was arrested on Wednesday. Police had released the images in order to ask the public for help in finding the man.

A 36-year-old man from Alkmaar who was arrested on April 15 has also been released, the OM reported. The two suspects that have been released are still suspects in the case. In total, four of the seven suspects of the art theft that took place at the end of January are still under arrest.

“The search for the Romanian art treasures continues and is still in full swing. Tracking them down is still the priority of the police and the Public Prosecution Service,” a statement from the OM read.
