A search of a van near the Rotterdam Port uncovered six men, likely of Iranian and Iraqi nationality, hidden in a small secret compartment inside the vehicle. Four people were arrested on suspicion of people smuggling after authorities made the discovery.

The van, which had a Romanian license plate, was inspected by authorities before driving aboard a ferry headed to England. The six others in the vehicle shot out of the van when officers found the hidden compartment.

Police in Amsterdam said they found 30 mobile phones stuffed inside a pair of cycling shorts being worn by a pickpocketing suspect at the time they detained him. Authorities took the 34-year-old man from Romania into custody when they made the discovery on January 21.

It happened during a performance in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, after several "reports of pickpocketing came in during the concert," police said. "Some victims could also provide a description."

All exits to the venue were sealed off, and a suspect fitting the description was spotted by police.

A Dutch man may be a suspect in the abduction and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Romania. The girl, Mihaela Fieraru, did not come home from school on Friday. Her body was found on Sunday, in a field a few kilometers from her hometown of Gura Sutii, NOS and NU.nl report.

The Romanian police have not confirmed the suspect's nationality, but Romanian media report that he's Dutch based on an unofficial statement from a police officer.

Police in the Netherlands found 14 foreign people hidden inside the cargo hold of a truck on Saturday. The people found were mostly adult men, and at least one boy, from the Palestinian territories, Syria and Yemen.

Ten of the people taken from the truck were found in a different truck at the same location on May 11, police said. They were given a two-year ban on entering Europe when they were sent out of the Netherlands.

One person was killed in an explosion on a passenger train car in Nijmegen on Sunday morning. There were no passengers on the train at the time, which was sitting idle in a rail yard at the time of the powerful blast, police said.

Witness accounts suggest that parts of the train came to rest dozens of meters away from the affected train car. Crime is not suspected in the incident, which took place around 9:45 a.m.

The municipalities of Maasdriel, Zuidplas, Zaltbommel and Tiel want to reduce the number of Polish and Romanian migrant workers living in residential neighborhoods, in order to keep the areas livable for local residents, RTL Nieuws reports.

The number of migrant workers from Eastern Europe grew significantly in these municipalities over the past years. Local residents complain about noise pollution and streets packed with cars with Eastern European license plates, according to the newspaper.

Dick Advocaat resigned as coach of Dutch national football team Oranje, he announced after Oranje won a match against Romania 0-3 on Tuesday.  He already decided that he would step down if the Netherlands didn't make it to the World Cup, he said, according to RTL Nieuws. "The main reason I'm leaving is that I find it time for another generation. The younger people must take over at Oranje."

The total population of the Netherlands increased by 35 thousand people in the first half of this year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. Like last year, immigration is still the driving force behind the population growth in the Netherlands.

During the first six months of this year about 100 thousand immigrants settled in the Netherlands, about the same as in the same period in 2016. A total of 69 thousand people emigrated away from the Netherlands. The migration balance is therefore 31 thousand, approximately the same as a year ago.

After over two years of investigation, the Dutch police arrested a group of Romanians suspected of stealing the cargo of at least 17 trucks while the trucks were on the move. The robberies started in early 2015. A number of arrests were made over the weekend, AD reports.

The gang drove a car up behind the moving truck. Thieves then got onto the hood of the moving car, forced the truck's cargo area open and threw the items in there into their own car. Other following cars kept traffic at a distance. The thieves mostly targeted trucks carrying expensive electronics.

An increasing number of Bulgarians and Romanians are working in the Netherlands, according to Statistic Netherlands on Friday. The number of Bulgarian workers increased from 3 thousand in 2013 to 8 thousand in 2015, and the number of Romanian workers from 6 thousand to 13 thousand.

Most of the Netherlands' migrant workers stillcome from Poland, according to the statistics office. There are currently 205 Polish people living in the Netherlands, 156 thousand of whom have a job or their own business.

KLM flight KL835 from Amsterdam to Singapore made an emergency landing in Bucharest, Romania late on Sunday night after a young child fell ill on the plane. According to Theo Nabuurs, who was on board, the child had a heart attack. He calls the pilot "a hero" on Twitter, saying that his actions saved a life.

Police in Rotterdam arrested five men after a search of a residence on Tuesday turned up a Kalashnikov rifle and a heavy-caliber handgun. Investigators were acting on a tip when they raided the home, and were surprised to find a significant number of bank card skimming devices, along with gloves and tie-rips, the police said in a statement.
