Police shoot man during arrest in Amsterdam city center

A police officer in the city center of Amsterdam shot and injured a suspect while responding to an incident early Monday morning. The wounded man was taken to an area hospital, police said without revealing the severity of his injuries.

“Following a threatening situation during an arrest on the Singel, the police shot a suspect around 5 a.m. on Monday,” the authorities confirmed on social media. The reason for the arrest was not immediately disclosed, and it was not clear if the man who was shot was also the individual being placed under arrest.

Records show at least two ambulances were dispatched to the Singel a few minutes before 5 a.m. A medical trauma team was also initially sent by ambulance to the Amsterdam Centrum address, as was a fire department crew.

The police-involved shooting will also be subject to an investigation by the Rijksrecherche. The independent organization operates under the Public Prosecution Service, and is tasked with reviewing all cases where a police officer uses force as well as allegations of misconduct at other government offices.

The results of the investigation will be handed over to prosecutors who can then decide whether the officer followed proper procedures, and if the officer should be criminally charged for their involvement in the shooting.
