Icy weather causing havoc on the tracks; Disruptions on many train routes

Rail traffic is off to a bumpy start in the Netherlands on Tuesday, partly due to the icy weather. Rail company NS reported no less than 22 issues, including 14 caused by disruptions and eight by maintenance, on various routes across the country.

“This cold morning we are dealing with many (switch) disruptions that affect our train services,” ProRail said on Threads. “This is due to the frost last night. It is very annoying for our travelers. Our people are on-site to resolve disruptions but take into account limited train traffic. Check the travel planner to see what this means for your trip.”

Switch failures are impacting train traffic between Woerden and Leiden Centraal, Bijlmer ArenA and Utrecht Centraal, Utrecht Centraal and Arnhem Centraal, Schiphol Airport and Leiden Centraal, Leiden Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal, and Amersfoort Centraal and Zwolle.

Objects on the railway are also disrupting train traffic between Rotterdam Centraal and Breda, Schiphol Airport and Lelystad Centraal, Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Centraal, Dordrecht and Lage Zwaluwe, and Den Haag Centraal and Dordrecht.

A collision has halted train traffic between Weert and Roermond, staffing issues are impacting trains running on the Heerlen - Aachen Hbf route, and other types of outages are impacting train traffic between Swalmen and Roermond and between Sittard and Maastricht.

On top of that, train traffic is at a standstill in several places due to railworks and maintenance. For example, ProRail is working on the tracks at Den Haag Centraal until March 2, resulting in limited to no train traffic to and from Den Haag Centraal on several days. Spring break has also started in the north of the country, so ProRail is working on the tracks on various routes there.
