Temps could fall to -10°C this weekend before warming up a bit next week
The Netherlands is in for a few more icy cold days before the weather will warm up a bit in the second half of next week, according to the KNMI. The meteorological institute forecasts nights with minimums below zero, with the eastern parts of the country even getting “moderate frost” - thermometers dipping to as low as -10 degrees Celsius in some places.
On Thursday morning, wet snow and frozen road sections are causing slippery conditions in the north of the country. In some places, there is 1 to 3 centimeters of snow cover. The KNMI issued a code yellow icy roads warning for Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Flevoland, and Overijssel. Conditions should improve by around 10:00 a.m.
Morning temperatures range from -4 degrees in Groningen and 2 degrees in the south. The east and southeast may get some snow or wet snow, the rest of the country should remain dry. Afternoon temperatures will climb no higher than 3 degrees, and the cloud cover might break here and there for some occasional sunshine.
Thursday night will be a mix of clouds and clear skies, with minimums dipping to -6 or even lower in areas where the cloud cover breaks. The night will be the coldest in the east. Along the coast, minimums will hover at or just above freezing.
Friday will be cloudy again, with some wintry showers possible in the Wadden area. Maximums will range between 2 and 5 degrees, with little wind and occasional sunshine expected. Occasional snow or wet snow may continue to fall in the north into the evening.
The weekend and early next week will be dry and fairly cold, with minimums dipping below freezing every night. The eastern parts of the country may even get moderate frost at night, with minimums between -5 and -10 degrees. Daytime temperatures will climb to a few degrees above zero.
Later next week will suddenly feel like spring is approaching, the KNMI expects. There is a 70 percent chance of “very mild” weather with occasional showers.
