Footballer Memphis Depay handed suspended jail sentence for driving under the influence
Oranje international Memphis Depay has been given a conditionally suspended four-month jail sentence in Monaco for driving under the influence. This was reported by French media outlets.
French newspaper Nice-Matin reported that Depay was caught behind the wheel of his Rolls Royce with a blood alcohol level of 1.01 in August. The footballer was not present at the hearing in the court in Monaco on Tuesday. Depay has been playing for Corinthians in Brazil since last year.
Depay apologized for his behavior on Instagram. “I would like to come on here and apologize. Last summer, during my holidays in Monaco, I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having some drinks in the restaurant,” the statement read. “I should’ve got in a taxi instead, but I didn’t, so I would like to apologize and take full responsibility for my action.”
The forward has scored 46 goals in 98 games for the Dutch national side. He currently plays in Brazil, having played for PSV, Manchester United, Lyon, FC Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid before this move.
