Memphis Depay to leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season as a free agent
Dutch forward Memphis Depay will leave Spanish side Atletico Madrid as a free agent this summer. The 30-year-old’s contract is expiring next month and will not be extended, according to reports. Depay will play for the national side at the European Championships this summer while not having a club.
This Saturday's match against Real Sociedad will be Depay's last for Atletico, as it's the final match of the season in La Liga, the top Spanish division. He joined Atletico in January 2023 from another top flight Spanish club, FC Barcelona.
Depay has played 40 times for manager Diego Simeone’s side and has scored 13 times. But injuries have plagued his time there.
There are currently no rumors about where Depay could end up. A strong performance at the European Championships in Germany this summer could raise his profile and attract interest from other clubs. PSV reportedly made an unsuccessful attempt just a year ago to bring Depay back to the club where he first rose to prominence and won a league title.
Depay joined Manchester United from PSV before playing for Olympique Lyon in France and FC Barcelona. He has 44 goals in 90 appearances for the Netherlands.
Atletico Madrid has had a disappointing season and is confirmed to finish fourth in the league table this season. Big changes are expected to be made to the squad in the summer, with it already being announced that two other Atletico players will not have their contracts extended and will also be leaving this summer.
