PSV to host Feyenoord in Dutch Cup quarterfinals; Quick Boys headed to AZ Alkmaar
Top men’s football club PSV will host Feyenoord at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven for the quarterfinals of the Dutch Cup. The draw for this stage of the tournament was held on Friday, with amateur club Quick Boys looking to pull off another miracle when they travel to Alkmaar to play AZ.
The matches in this round will take place on February 4, February 5, and February 6. PSV currently sits at the top of the Eredivisie table, and will face fourth-ranked Feyenood in the single-elimination match. But PSV had a rough time getting to this stage, needing a late injury time goal to go level with Excelsior earlier this week. They scored two extra time goals, and conceded a penalty in the 117th minute, to win 5-4.
AZ pulled off a 2-0 victory to knockout Ajax in the previous round. The Amsterdam side gave up eight shots on goal, even though Ajax held the ball for much longer. AZ’s Wouter Goes scored in the first half, while Mexx Meerdink put the final nail in the coffin in the 89th minute.
They will host amateur team Quick Boys in the next round. The amateur side from Katwijk aan Zee defeated Eredivisie team SC Heerenveen 3-2 on Thursday to book their place in the quarter-finals. This was the third Eredivisie team that they have defeated this season after also beating Fortuna Sittard and Almere City in the previous rounds.
The other amateur team still left in the competition, VV Noordwijk, will travel to Go Ahead Eagles in the quarter-finals. Noordwijk defeated fellow amateurs Barendrecht on Tuesday after they had beaten Eredivisie team Willem II in the previous round. Go Ahead Eagles beat fellow Eredivisie side FC Twente 3-1 in the last 16 round to advance to the quarter-finals.
The last match will be played in Almelo, as Heracles plays at home against FC Utrecht. While the visitors currently rank third on the Eredivisie table, Heracles is in 15th place. Utrecht had no problems advancing past the amateurs at the Amsterdamsche Football Club, beating them in an eight-goal shutout. Heracles was able to get past De Graafschap in a two-goal shutout, but they have lost two of their last five Eredivisie matches, and played to draws in the other three.
