Dutch ambassador to attend Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington
The Netherlands' ambassador to the United States, Birgitta Tazelaar, will represent the country at the funeral of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed her attendance on behalf of the Dutch government.
The funeral for Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, will be held Thursday in Washington. Carter, remembered for his focus on human rights and diplomacy, passed away after a prolonged period in hospice care.
Ambassador Tazelaar’s presence underscores the close diplomatic ties between the Netherlands and the United States. Her participation highlights the respect the Dutch government holds for Carter’s contributions to international peace and his enduring global legacy.
The ceremony is expected to draw numerous foreign dignitaries, reflecting Carter’s role on the global stage. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Tazelaar’s attendance is part of a broader tradition of honoring leaders whose work has influenced international relations.
Tribute from Princess Mabel
Princess Mabel, the widow of Prince Friso, one of King Willem-Alexander’s brothers, also shared her admiration for Carter. She worked closely with The Elders, a group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela to promote peace and human rights, where Carter was a member. Princess Mabel stopped her work with The Elders after her husband’s ski accident and subsequent death in 2013. At the time of Prince Friso’s passing, Willem-Alexander was still a prince.
Princess Mabel posted a tribute to Carter on Instagram, reflecting on his commitment to global justice and humanity. “Jimmy Carter inspired millions through his courage and dedication to peace,” she wrote.
"On a more personal note, I will never forget his support and prayers for my late husband, me and our young daughters after Friso’s accident in 2012," Princess Mabel added.
