At least seven overnight explosions in Amsterdam, mostly in West district
A series of explosions disrupted the night in Amsterdam West and Zuidoost, damaging homes and leaving residents shaken but unharmed. Between the evening of December 29 and the early hours of December 30, explosives detonated at seven locations, causing significant property damage and sparking an investigation, according to the police.
The incidents occurred across Jacques Veltmanstraat at 7:55 p.m., Orteliuskade at 1:51 a.m., Krulslaplanstoen at 2:00 a.m., Laan van Spartaan at 2:13 a.m., Johan Hofmanstraat at 2:15 a.m., Hoofdweg at 2:22 a.m., and Jan Zijverszstraat at 3:10 a.m.
The series of explosions adds to a growing number of incidents involving explosive devices in Amsterdam this year, raising serious concerns about public safety. Law enforcement emphasized the risks posed to residents, bystanders, and emergency responders by the use of illegal fireworks, flammable liquids, and improvised explosive devices.
“These materials have no place in public spaces where people live and work,” police stated. “They create life-threatening situations that must be stopped.”
Police have intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible, with several arrests and convictions already leading to significant prison sentences. However, officials stress that community involvement is crucial in preventing further incidents. “Residents know their neighborhoods best,” the police noted. “If something seems out of place, they are the first to notice. Reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement is vital.”
