Ridderkerk man arrested in fatal Vroomshoop fire; victim known for disputes

A man from Ridderkerk has been arrested for suspected involvement in a deadly house fire in Vroomshoop, Overijssel, that claimed the lives of two residents and three dogs. Police are investigating arson as the potential cause of the fire, which devastated the quiet neighborhood on Friday evening.

The fire broke out in a corner house on Meidoornlaan around 8 p.m. Firefighters responded promptly and managed to rescue the victims, a man and a woman, from the burning home. Despite immediate medical treatment and transport to a hospital, both victims succumbed to their injuries.

“We located and removed the victims relatively quickly,” a fire department spokesperson said. “They were treated on-site before being rushed to the hospital.”

The house sustained significant damage, and gas leaking from the meter box prolonged firefighting efforts. Enexis, the regional energy supplier, was called to shut off the gas supply. Adjacent homes were evacuated as a precaution, with one neighboring property also suffering damage.

Local residents reported hearing an explosion before the fire began. One neighbor described a loud bang, but authorities have yet to confirm the claim. “We cannot provide details about what caused the fire or whether an explosion was involved,” said a police spokesperson. Investigators are examining the cause and have not ruled out deliberate intent.

The victims owned three dogs, all of which perished in the blaze. The neighbors suggested they had also been affected by disputes involving their owner.

Shortly after the fire, police arrested a man from Ridderkerk near the scene. Authorities have not disclosed his identity but confirmed he is being questioned about possible involvement in the incident. Law enforcement officials are considering arson as a likely cause of the fire.

“The arrest indicates that a deliberate act is part of our investigation,” said a police spokesperson. “At this time, we do not believe the fire was accidental.”

The male victim was described by neighbors as a combative individual who frequently engaged in disputes. Residents in the area suggested that tensions with others may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the fire.

“He wasn’t popular at all,” one neighbor remarked. Local newspaper Tubantia characterized him as someone who “had arguments with everyone.” One comment on Facebook even read, “Your own fault, Herman. Dirty scum that you were”.

The house itself drew attention from neighbors due to its heavy security measures, including multiple surveillance cameras and reinforced shutters. “It never felt like something was right there,” said one resident.

The typically quiet neighborhood of row houses and semi-detached homes has been left stunned by the incident. Journalist Geert Gordijn, reporting from the area, described it as “a normal, orderly community where people know each other and keep an eye out for one another.”
