Suspects in explosive arson that killed 6 in The Hague to appear in court today
The pre-trial chamber of the court in The Hague will decide on Tuesday whether to extend the pre-trial detention of the four suspects of the devastating explosion at the Tarwekamp in the Mariahoeve district of The Hague. The suspects will appear in a closed session before three judges.
The explosion occurred on December 7. It resulted in the collapse of several buildings, and other buildings were severely damaged. Six people lost their lives, and several more were injured.
Police arrested two men (23 and 29 years old) from Roosendaal and a 33-year-old from Rotterdam on December 9. This was followed by the arrest of a 33-year-old from Oosterhout two days later.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects them of causing the explosion with the death of six people and the injuries of others as a result of this. They are also accused of setting fire to a car and preparing arson. The two men from Roosendaal were arrested at the beginning of December in a car with several jerrycans, flares, and heavy fireworks.
Authorities have released little or nothing about the circumstances and background of the explosion thus far. The explosions are possibly connected to an attack on a bridal store which was located at the Tarwekamp.
The AD reported last week that the suspect from Rotterdam had sought out the two men from Roosendaal to perform the attack on the store. The paper reported that the reason for this was a broken relationship between the Rotterdammer and the store's owner.
The court's chamber can extend the suspects' pre-trial detention by up to ninety days. After that, the case must come to the court for a first public hearing.
