Babboe to offer refunds for unsafe bikes after safety recall

Babboe, a prominent Dutch manufacturer of cargo bikes, has agreed to offer refunds to customers who purchased certain models of its bicycles deemed to have a potential safety risk. This decision comes after the company engaged in talks with the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), following complaints from customers and the Consumer Association (Consumentenbond).

Starting at the end of January 2024, Babboe will provide customers who are affected by the recall with an option to request a refund instead of a replacement bike. The refund amount will be determined based on the age of the bicycle. The recall affects certain models, including the Babboe CITY, CITY-E, MINI, and MINI-E, which have been found to pose safety risks, and they are no longer to be used.

Babboe initially offered vouchers for replacement bikes to consumers, but this solution was met with dissatisfaction from many customers. The ACM received numerous complaints, with many consumers expressing a preference for receiving their money back instead of waiting for a replacement bike. The Consumer Association also voiced concerns, urging the ACM to intervene.

In response to these concerns, Babboe has expanded its recall process to offer a direct refund option. The company will also continue to report to the ACM on the progress of the recall and the number of customers opting for the refund. This new option will be available to customers whose bikes are still covered by the recall and who have not yet received a replacement.

Earlier this year, Babboe initiated a recall for several of its bike models after discovering potential safety risks. The recall, in coordination with the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), affects models that may not meet required safety standards. Babboe has also committed to offering compensation for the inconvenience caused to customers affected by the recall, which includes providing vouchers for maintenance services or accessories.

Babboe announced that a third of the bikes affected by the recall would need to be fully replaced, but the majority of the recalled bikes can return to the road after undergoing a repair or inspection process. In addition to the refund option, customers whose bikes do not require replacement will be inspected to ensure they meet safety standards before being used again.

As part of the recall process, Babboe has also suspended the sale of certain bike models. In February 2024, the NVWA ordered the company to halt the sale of models that had not been adequately proven to be safe. Babboe has worked closely with the NVWA to conduct further investigations and ensure that only safe bikes are available for purchase.

In April 2024, Babboe will launch a dedicated website, "controleerjebakfiets.nl," where owners can check if their bike is part of the recall or needs an inspection. If a bike is not part of the recall, it will undergo a safety check to allow customers to use it safely again.
