Gunman opens fire in Arnhem nightlife district; One badly hurt, suspect at-large
A man was critically injured in a shooting early Sunday near the Korenmarkt in Arnhem, according to police. The victim was transported in critical condition to Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen following the incident.
Emergency services were alerted just before 6 a.m. about the shooting, which occurred in a side street of the Korenmarkt, a central nightlife area. The injured man reportedly walked to Willemsplein after the shooting, leaving a significant blood trail, according to an emergency services reporter.
The area surrounding the Korenmarkt was cordoned off early Sunday morning as forensic investigators collected evidence at the scene. “Forensic investigators have been deployed to examine the site and collect evidence,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are working to determine what happened.
Police launched a manhunt for the suspect using Burgernet, a public alert system. The suspect is described as a white male wearing a red vest with a white logo on the sleeve and dark pants. Authorities advised the public not to approach the individual and to contact emergency services immediately if he is spotted.
By mid-morning, the police had removed the cordons, and the Korenmarkt and Willemsplein were reopened to the public. A reporter from Omroep Gelderland noted that as of 9:30 a.m., there was no longer a visible police presence in the area.
