Roughly 400 couples plan to get married on A10 motorway on Amsterdam’s 750th birthday

A remarkable 399 couples have signed up to exchange vows on Amsterdam's A10 motorway during the city’s 750th-anniversary celebrations. The event, part of the "Op de Ring!" festival on June 21, 2025, will temporarily transform a stretch of the ring road into an official wedding venue. Due to the high volume of applications, a lottery will decide which couples can participate.

For one day, the A10 will be closed to traffic, allowing selected couples to marry at the specially designated venue. The ceremonies will be officiated free of charge by Amsterdam’s civil marriage officiants, known locally as babsen, and will be conducted in either Dutch or English. The municipality promises a festive atmosphere with space for guests to celebrate alongside the newlyweds.

Applications closed on December 1, 2024. With demand exceeding capacity, a notary-supervised lottery will determine the final list of participants. Couples will be notified of the results by January 31, 2025. Those chosen must still formally announce their marriage or partnership through official channels in Amsterdam. Only couples where both individuals are registered as Amsterdam residents are eligible.

Organizers are finalizing the exact number of ceremonies that can be accommodated during the festival. The event will also feature a designated area for marriage proposals, giving couples who are not yet engaged the chance to mark the occasion in a memorable way.

The weddings are part of the larger "Op de Ring!" festival, which will run from June 20 to 22, 2025. The festival will temporarily repurpose the A10 inner ring for cultural and community activities, including performances, art installations, and public gatherings. Film and photo recordings will document the day.

This initiative aligns with Amsterdam's broader "Future Fest," celebrating its milestone anniversary by highlighting the city's history and future through various events.
