Video: Four hurt after car slams into bakery in Gelderland
Four people got hurt when a car crashed right into the Frentz bakery on Ugchelseweg in Ugchelen on Friday morning. One was badly hurt, the other three sustained more minor injuries. The driver was unharmed, De Gelderlander reported.
An ambulance took the seriously hurt person to a hospital. The other three were treated at a first aid post. The police could not tell the newspaper whether the victims were customers or staff in the bakery.
“We are currently investigating how it could have gone wrong, but the first impression is that there was no intent involved,” a police spokesperson said.
Emergency services responded to the scene in large numbers at around 10:20 a.m., including police, the fire brigade, and at least four ambulances.
Witnesses told De Gelderlander that the driver was trying to park when the crash happened. They believe the driver accidentally drove forward instead of reversing.
The car came to a standstill in the middle of the bakery, right against the counter. A bag of pepernoten cookies ended up on the badly damaged vehicle’s roof.
A cashier at the adjacent Dekamarkt heard a loud bang. “And then I saw that car there. There were four injured people. A girl got trapped,” they said. “The police were there within a few minutes and everyone had to leave the shop quickly.”
The police cordoned off the area around the bakery. The adjacent clothing stores, hairdresser, and flower shop are open, but people can’t enter because of the police tape.
Victim support is available for bystanders, the police said.
