Teen on bike killed in collision with truck in Maassluis

A child on a bicycle died in a collision with a truck in Maassluis on Thursday morning, the Rotterdam police said on X, wishing the boy’s relatives “a lot of strength.” The victim was a 14-year-old boy, the police later confirmed.
The accident happened on Doctor Jan Socutenlaan at around 8:00 a.m. “When the truck exited the roundabout, the cyclist wound up under the truck,” police said in a statement. “Emergency services arrived quickly, but unfortunately the victim died at the scene.”
“The truck driver is a 23-year-old man from Enschede. He was arrested on suspicion of causing a fatal accident in which he may have been under the influence of drugs,” police stated.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Police asked that any witnesses contact them with information. Further, any witnesses, bystanders or surviving family members can take advantage of mental support services from Slachtofferhulp.
This is the second fatal accident in the Netherlands involving a truck this week. On Monday, a garbage truck hit a tourist in Amsterdam. The 69-year-old woman from the United States died at the scene.
