Research shows that the walking distance at Schiphol is one of the longest in Europe
A person walking from the departure hall to the gate will walk almost 1.5 kilometers at Schiphol, which makes the walking distance at Schiphol among the longest of the airports in Europe, according to comparison site Parkos.
The site, which usually compares parking spaces at airports, calculated the distance from the entrance of the departure hall to the furthest gate with the help of Google Earth. According to Parkos, Schiphol is eighth on the European list for the furthest walking distances in an airport.
Madrid-Barajas is the airport with the longest walking distance. Passengers could walk over 2.5 kilometers but can also use free shuttles at that airport. The airport in Athens is second, with just under 2.5 kilometers, and Charles de Gaulle in Paris is third, with 2,346 meters.
Frankfurt Airport and London Heathrow have longer walking distances than Schiphol. Passengers could have to walk 1,800 meters at those airports.
There are also larger airports where the walking distance is much shorter. The Malpensa in Milan only has a maximum of 761 meters. Eindhoven airport, the second largest airport in the Netherlands, has a distance of 485 meters, according to Parkos. Rotterdam The Hague airport has a maximum of 189 meters.
