Vacation traffic: more traffic jams on French roads than last Black Saturdays

Vacation traffic hits several European countries this weekend. For instance, the French roads are busier on Saturday than on previous black Saturdays. At 12 p.m., there were 1131 kilometers of traffic jams in France, the ANWB reports.

Last Saturday, at its peak, there were 1,053 kilometers of traffic jams in the popular holiday country, and the week before that, 830 kilometers. According to the ANWB, this week's traffic jams are mainly caused by returning holiday traffic.

Furthermore, the roads in Switzerland are also busy this weekend due to the large amount of (arriving and departing) vacation traffic. On the A2 Basel - Chiasso, the delay for the Gotthard tunnel can be more than an hour. In addition, there will be traffic jams on the A13 Chur - Bellinzona this week.

German roads have been dominated by vacation traffic since Friday afternoon. According to the ANWB, Saturday and Sunday will also be very busy due to the heavy vacation traffic, both on departure and return. The busiest highways in Germany are A1/A7 near Hamburg, A3 Frankfurt - Nuremberg and the A5 Karlsruhe - Basel.
