Urk family still in Germany after hotel collapse; Father's condition worse than thought

The three Urk residents who were rescued from the rubble of a collapsed hotel in Kroev, Germany, on Wednesday will remain in Germany for the time being. The 26-year-old father’s injuries are worse than initially thought, and he can’t be moved yet, Omroep Flevoland reports. He spent around 12 hours trapped under the rubble.

It was previously reported that the man had suffered a broken arm and damage to his esophagus. His family now told the broadcaster that he also has no feeling in his feet and must undergo kidney dialysis.

The 23-year-old mother and nearly 2-year-old son miraculously survived the collapse largely unscathed. A door fell on top of them and sheltered them from the rest of the rubble. The toddler was unhurt, and his mother sustained only minor injuries.

Fourteen people were in the Reichsschenke Zum Ritter Götz hotel when it collapsed for still unknown reasons at around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Five managed to get out on their own. Two people died. Their identities have not been confirmed yet.

Rescue workers pulled the first four survivors out of the rubble on Wednesday morning. The Dutch mother and child were among them. The Urk man was the fifth person rescued at around 11:30 a.m. The other two were pulled from the building later in the day.
