Third hand grenade hits Spijkenisse home in a month

A hand grenade exploded at a home in Spijkenesse during the early hours of Monday morning. The explosion happened at a home on Vlinderveen, where hand grenades were found in two other incidents earlier this month.

No one got hurt in Monday’s explosion, but the blast did crack several windows, including those of neighbors. Eyewitnesses told Rijnmond that someone tried to throw the grenade into the home but missed. The hand grenade fell onto the street and exploded there.

The two previous hand grenades found at the home did not explode. The first was found on July 4. Several homes on the street were evacuated while the authorities removed the explosive. The mayor then closed the house. The second grenade was left at the home on July 7.

A neighbor described the blast as a “gigantic explosion,” according to Rijnmond. “It was very close. Too close,” he said. He is surprised that whoever is behind the grenades keeps targeting a house closed by the municipality. “What are they doing? I mean, no one lives here. They don’t achieve anything with this, only that people are afraid and will no longer dare to go out on the street because they don’t know what will happen next.”

“It’s surreal,” another local told the broadcaster. “What are we supposed to do with this? Just wait and hope it doesn’t happen again? Or pack your things and move.”

The police have placed two mobile cameras on the street. As far as is known, no arrests have been made.
