Limited damage from Code Orange storm; Some blown over trees, flooding

The thunderstorms that moved across the Netherlands on Tuesday evening toppled many trees and caused some flooding, but the damage seems limited. As far as is known, no one got hurt. The KNMI lifted the code orange for the last provinces at around 10:45 p.m.

Weeronline reported that the storms caused “some nuisance” locally, but there were no large-scale problems. “The most rain fell over a strip from the middle of Brabant towards Gelderland. Almost 50 millimeters fell in the extreme south of Brabant, and 43 millimeters fell in Homoet (Gelderland). A lot of rain also fell in the Amsterdam region, with locally 40 millimeters.”

The fire brigade responded to many reports of fallen trees in Noord-Brabant and Gelderland, among other places. Oirschot in Noord-Brabant saw a remarkable number of trees topple, NOS reported.

The heavy showers also flooded tunnels and viaducts. Several streets flooded in Amsterdam West, among other places, because the drains could not handle the volume of water.

In Drunen, a lightning strike likely caused a big fire in a chicory nursery, Omroep Brabant reported. The fire caused a lot of smoke.
