Netherlands will face Romania in EURO Round of 16 football match on Tuesday

The Dutch men's national football team will face Romania in the Round of 16 at the European Football Championship. The match will take place in Munich at 6 p.m. next Tuesday. The team that wins the match will move on to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the Austria vs. Turkey match.

The Netherlands has won ten matches against Romania, and lost, out of fourteen meetings. They last played in 2017 in a match Oranje won 3-0. Romania beat the Netherlands in an October 2007 match 1-0.

The tournament has six groups of four teams each, with the first and second place teams in each group advancing to the Round of 16. The top four third place teams also advance to the next round.

Those teams and rankings were determined after a wild finish to the group stage on Wednesday. Oranje wound up ranked the highest of the third place teams, ahead of Georgia, Slovakia and Slovenia. Georgia advanced by beating Portugal 2-0 in Group F, while Turkey simultaneously beat the Czech Republic, 2-1, with the Czech team down to ten men for most of the match.

Both the Netherlands and Georgia were tied on four points, a goal difference of zero, four goals scored and one group stage win. But the Netherlands had a two disciplinary points for two yellow cards, which was better than Georgia's six points from six yellow cards. Slovakia was ranked third with fewer goals scored than the Dutch and Georgian teams, while Slovenia had only three group stage points.

As a result, the Netherlands will not play England as many had expected. Oranje has a path to the semi-finals that avoids many of the tournament's top teams.

England will play Slovakia, and Switzerland will face Italy. The winner of those two matches will compete against each other to face either the Netherlands, Romania, Austria or Turkey.

Spain will take on Georgia, with the winner competing against either Germany or Denmark. Meanwhile, Portugal will square off against Slovenia, and France will take on Belgium. The winners of those matches will do battle.
