Fans injured after scaffolding collapses during FC Twente practice match
Ten people were injured in Geesteren (Overijssel) on Saturday evening after scaffolding fell on them, the Twente fire department reported. The accident occurred on the football field of the Stevo club. Before the practice match against FC Twente, a large banner hanging from a crane fell down.
FC Twente informed that all the injured are conscious and have received medical treatment. The fire department reported that the emergency services were on site in large numbers. In addition, a trauma helicopter was also called.
According to RTV Oost, some of the victims were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The exact number of injured is unclear, but a fire department spokesman told the regional broadcaster that it was less than 20 and that there have been no fatalities. Furthermore, no one suffered life-threatening injuries, RTV Oost reported.
FC Twente director Dominique Scholten was shocked after the incident. "A terrible incident. I have no words for it. "I was sitting in the stands, I saw it happen. The first reaction was to run and help. A lot of people did that," he told RTV Oost. Scholten later thanked everyone who came to help when the incident happened. "Good to see that so many people came to help," he told ESPN.
The Twente football club is in contact with the fans who took care of the banner, Stevo, and the authorities. "Together, we are investigating how this incident could have happened," FC Twente wrote on X. The practice match was canceled after the incident.
