Worst traffic jam ever expected on the A12 from The Hague to Utrecht on Monday

Rijkswaterstaat expects enormous traffic jams on the A12 from The Hague to Utrecht on Monday due to roadworks. “If road users do not adjust their travel behavior, this could easily become the worst traffic jam ever on the A12,” says environmental manager Leonie de Vries.

Rijkswaterstaat will start work on the route on Sunday at 10 p.m. and continue throughout June. From Monday, two lanes will be less available on the A12 between Nieuwerbrug and De Meern, as the asphalt will be renewed.

“Normally, this road is already very busy, but now, with the closures and the halved capacity on weekdays during the day, the traffic jams can reach as far as The Hague,” reports Rijkswaterstaat. Drivers are therefore advised to work from home as often as possible and use public transport or bicycle.

“Road users who still have to take to the roads are well advised to use the navigation system to find the best detour routes. However, the detour routes will also be very busy.” The ANWB also reports that road users should expect significant traffic delays and considerable additional travel times. “The A12 is one of the busiest highways in the country,” says the ANWB. “We advise people to pay attention to the traffic information and plan an alternative route in good time if necessary.

Over the next month, two of the four lanes in the direction of Utrecht will be closed on 11 days of the week. The highway in the direction of Utrecht will be completely closed for ten nights. In addition, the A12 and A20 in the direction of Utrecht will be closed on four weekends between Moordrecht and the Oudenrijn junction, while the A12 will remain open between Gouda and the Reeuwijk exit. Traffic will be diverted via Amsterdam or Gorinchem.
