Traffic jams expected as more schools reopen after summer vacation

The public works department Rijkswaterstaat expects traffic jams to increase from Monday, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. Schools in the central Netherlands start today, and roadworks are underway on several highways.

With summer vacation ending for the central region, most of the Netherlands is back at school and work. Schools started in the south of the country last week, and the north region will start next week.

There are also road works on the A2 near Nieuwegein, which caused gridlocks around Utrecht last week. The A10 inner ring in Amsterdam is closed for work. And work is also being done on the A15 between Papendrecht and Gorinchem.

At 8:16 a.m., the ANWB reported 33 traffic jams covering 162 kilometers of Dutch roads. The A2 was the biggest problem, with cars piling up for 35 kilometers from ‘s-Hertogenbosch to Utrecht, from Utrecht to Amsterdam, and from Eindhoven to Maastricht due to roadworks and an accident. Road users could expect up to 40 minutes of extra travel time.
