Lieke Martens to retire from international duty in June
Lieke Martens announced that she will retire from international duty in June. The winger was named in manager Andries Jonker’s squad to play two matches against Finland on May 31 and June 4. The game away in Finland on June 4 will be her last for Oranje.
Martens will play her last home match for Oranje in Rotterdam. The matches against Finland are qualifying matches for the European Championships in 2025.
“I will try to enjoy everything as much as I can but will, as always, give everything so we can get a nice result with our team,” Martens said in a message to Oranje fans announcing her decision.
The 31-year-old, who plays for Paris Saint Germain, debuted for the national side in 2011. Her crowning achievement was winning the European Championships in 2017 in the Netherlands.
“It is not a surprise for me,” Jonker said. “The Olympics was the ideal moment to say goodbye for Lieke. When that plan was scuppered by the loss in the Nations League in February, she told me that the European Championships of 2025 was too far and that she would like for somebody else in the squad to take her position.”
Martens played 158 times for her country, scoring 62 goals during that time. She made her debut against China in a 1-1 draw.
