Video Utrecht's Dom Tower gets its clock faces back

The Dom Tower in Utrecht got its clock faces back on Monday. They were removed in 2019 as part of a general renovation of the Utrecht icon. The four clock faces were reinstalled on Monday, RTV Utrecht reports.

The four clock faces have been refurbished and painted, and the 48 numbers—1 to 12 times four—received a fresh layer of gold leaf. One refurbished face was installed on each side of the Dom Tower. The massive operation started before sunrise on Monday.

Dom Tower manager Jaap van Engelenburg is delighted to have them back. He was surprised by how much the removal of them changed the tower's appearance. “It’s as if someone shaved off his beard. You think: What a bare-buttocked face that tower suddenly has.”

Scaffolding will obscure the replaced clock faces at first, but the city intends to remove that as quickly as possible, according to the broadcaster.

Utrecht residents are warned not to use the Dom Tower to check the time yet. The movement on the dials will only be connected toward the end of May.
