The Hague’s tallest residential towers will be shorter than planned

Two residential towers that are set to be built in The Hague will not rise as high as previously planned. The height of one tower was planned to reach a height of 180 meters, but that will be scaled down to 139 meters. The other tower will be 105 meters instead of 153 meters in height.

The towers are part of The Grace complex, and were supposed to become the two tallest buildings in The Hague. That will no longer be the case, but they will still be built by the Den Haag HS station. Because both towers will be lower, fewer residential units will be built there.

That number will fall from 1,411 to 1,300. The complex will have fewer homes available for the open market, mid-range rental and social housing rental. However, the development will now include 240 homes for students in the towers.

The developer is suffering from “deteriorating market conditions such as construction and interest costs,” said The Hague Alderman Robert van Asten, who handles urban development policy. The project was supposed to start construction in 2022, but it has faced delays and the plans have been modified to get it off the ground.

The Hague now has approximately 565,000 inhabitants and is expected to have approximately 620,000 to 630,000 inhabitants in about 15 years. There is no room for large new residential areas in the city, so the municipality wants to build higher towers around the Hollands Spoor, Den Haag Centraal and Laan van NOI stations.

The Hague wants to build two other towers of 160 meters close to Hollands Spoor. The tallest buildings in The Hague are now the two buildings from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice and Security. Both are 146 meters tall. The Hoftoren from the Ministry of Education is 142 meters high.

The tallest building in the Netherlands is also a residential tower, the 215-meter-high Zalmhaven in Rotterdam. The second-tallest building is the Maastoren, an office building in Rotterdam that rises 165 meters from the ground.
