Shots fired at car in Amsterdam Zuidoost kills one
Shots rang out on the Langbroekdreef in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Wednesday night, striking one person. The victim later died of their injuries, police said.
Authorities confirmed that a vehicle was shot at by two suspects who were sitting on a scooter at the time. They then fled the scene on the two-wheeler. After the gunshots, the car crashed into the front of a nearby firehouse.
Firefighters at the station managed to revive the victim shortly after the 8:40 p.m. incident, police stated. Several ambulances were dispatched to the scene as well as a trauma team in a helicopter amid reports of the resuscitation attempt. The victim's condition was not immediately released. About two hours after the shooting police said the person had died.
There were no other injuries from the shooting, and nobody was hurt inside the fire station at the time of the crash.
Authorities issued an alert minutes after the incident for two people wearing dark clothes and black helmets. Police asked people between Langbroekdreef and Gooiseweg, Diemen to be on the lookout for the suspects riding a black scooter with three wheels. Police later revised this to say they were searching for a two-wheeled vehicle.
Meanwhile, on the Langbroekdreef, a criminal investigation was well underway on Wednesday night. Forensic investigators were busy at the scene collecting evidence. Police asked anyone with information that might be relevant, or anyone who saw something suspicious in the area, to contact them immediately.
It was the second high profile fatal shooting in Amsterdam on Wednesday. Earlier in the morning, defense attorney Derk Wiersum was gunned down in front of his home in Amsterdam Zuid. There were no known suspects in custody in that case by 10 p.m.
"We will of course consider this in the investigation, but for the time being we assume that this shooting incident is separate," police said.
