PSV very disappointed by early elimination from Champions League

PSV is massively disappointed with their elimination from the Champions League by FC Basel in the second qualifying round on Tuesday. But the Eindhoven team will pull themselves back up and focus on the Eredivisie, right back Denzel Dumfries and captain Pablo Rosario said, NU.nl reports.

On Tuesday evening PSV lost 2-1 to FC Basel. Despite the 3-2 win in last week's away game, Tuesday's score was not enough for the Eindhoven team to progress to the third qualifying round. Basel scored its first goal in the first eight minutes of the match. PSV caught up later in the first half, but lost hope when Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored the winning goal for the Swiss 20 minutes before the match was over.

"It is horrible now, but we have to stand up straight and we will do just dat", Dumfries said on Tuesday. "The Europa League is now the highest attainable and that is what we are aiming for, while FC Twente is already on the doorstep. I am looking forward to it."

Despite recent criticism on PSV's defense, Dumfries doesn't think the defense failed completely at Sankt Jakob-Park on Tuesday. "We gave away the goals too easily, but of course we did everything we could to prevent goals", the right back emphasized. He also doesn't blame PSV's attackers. "Whether we should have scored more often? I'm not going to point my finger now. As a team, we let ourselves down a little bit, both offensive and defensive. It went wrong in the small moments and that is very disappointing. We should've dragged the game across the line ourselves."

"After the first 20 minutes we got into the game well and we had it under control", Pablo Rosario, who was captain in the absence of Ibrahim Afellay, said according to the newspaper. "We created opportunities and should have made the 2-1 ourselves, but then we gave the goal away too easily." He too will now focus on the Eredivisie. "It is important that we start the competition well", Roasario said. "The way we lost against Basel is very painful. But we are professional and have to work towards the match against Twente as quickly as possible."

The Eredivisie season kicks off this weekend. PSV will face FC Twente in the Grolsch Veste on Saturday.
